What is sleep disturbance and how is it diagnosed? | Prof. Michael Polkey | Welbeck

Sleep disturbance is a highly prevalent symptom that can cause multiple health and lifestyle issues. Disrupted or poor-quality sleep may also have knock-on impacts for conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sleep disturbance can be triggered by many factors, including stress, losing a loved one, noisy neighbours, or being woken frequently during the night by young children.

In this video, Professor Michael Polkey, Sleep Medicine and Respiratory Consultant at OneWelbeck Lung Health, discusses the causes and symptoms associated with sleep disorders and explains how a lack of sleep or disrupted sleep can impact your overall health and wellbeing.

The sleep study offered at OneWelbeck is incredibly convenient and non-invasive, as you are able to perform the test in the comfort of your own home. Unlike traditional methods, you can still move around during the night. The device is taken home for one night, where you will attach it yourself and be monitored while you sleep. A full guide is provided to assist with setup.

If sleep apnoea is identified from the sleep study, treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. There are a number of treatment options available, including lifestyle advice such as weight loss, positional therapy, wearing a dental mouthpiece, or the gold-standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA): continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Sleep hygiene is also very important in reducing difficulties associated with sleep. Professor Polkey advises avoiding caffeinated products after midday, keeping your bedroom quiet and dark, and limiting the use of mobile phones and tablets before bedtime. If you are struggling with insomnia, it is often recommended not to stay in bed awake, but instead to get up and do something calming before returning to bed once you feel sleepy again.

If you are concerned that you may have a sleep disorder or ongoing sleep disturbance, OneWelbeck Lung Health has a team of sleep specialists who can provide consultations and diagnostic tests appropriate for your symptoms.
