presents episode 2409 | DR BEN BIKMAN w/ Digital Social Hour: Sean Kelly

Preferred method: do some intervention with person or animal…
-when we see: every metabolic marker is improving, they can
have an increase in LDL at same time
“We use mammals in our experiments for genetic research.
For dietary research, rats have very similar response, including
hormone response, as humans”
For example, Alzheimers is really metabolic
problem-brain is more IR and cannot get
enough glucose from blood for fuel.
Same for depression, bipolar, migraines
Could not do this type of brain research in humans…

Sleep and IR? Yes, there is a strong connection…
3 main causes of IR:
-chronic high insulin
-inflammation
-stress [one cause: poor sleep raising stress hormones]
one bad night of sleep leads to IR the next day
2 main stress hormones:
-cortisol & adrenaline, both elevated by bad
sleep [but 1 good night would solve it]
-most then drink a lot of caffeine—which
increases adrenaline–becomes cycle
One good night sleep will not solve it

College age people can shrug off a lot of these metabolic shots…
But, at this stage, exiting puberty, you set your habits for life
-need to get to bed early, get up early
-don’t mess with alcohol, it screws up sleep
With alcohol, fall asleep faster, but then very bad sleep rest of night
