Doug, 46, has reported on sleep disorders several times through the years. But despite his constant tiredness and admitted lack of rest, he never realized that he himself could have a problem—until he interviewed a doctor in 2006 about obstructive sleep apnea.
David Schulman, MD, director of the Emory Sleep Disorders Laboratory in Atlanta, suggests visiting your primary care physician first, if you suspect a problem. He or she can help you make the decision whether to see a sleep specialist, have a sleep study done, or try at-home techniques for better sleep.
“Unfortunately, many people really don’t recognize what they’re doing during the day that may be having a significant impact on sleep,” says Carol Ash, DO, medical director of the Sleep for Life center in Hillsborough, N.J.
